From there (Pensacola) to here (Bimini)
After a year of planning and 45 days of stop and start traveling (see previous blogs), we finally made it to the Bahamas on Sunday, the 15th, landing in Alicetown on North Bimini, Bahamas! Along the way, we’ve taken pictures at our various stops and while underway but haven’t posted very many of them. So before I go on and on about the Windex colored water and the incredible time we’ve had in Bimini so far, I wanted to give a recap of our stops and FINALLY post some of our pictures. Above pics are:
1. Bill and Dreama, neighbors in Little Shark Creek
2. Waves while crossing the Big Bend. Hard to capture, but they were impressive.
3. Morgan, Bonnie and Nyla in Goodland.
4. Very unusual channel marker in Gordon Pass. On the ICW, the markers are usually red triangles and green squares. Depending on which way you're going, the markers tell you which side you should be on. Figure this one out!
5. Koki, Sea Cat Third Class. She hasn't been promoted because she only comes out when the boat stops, then she tries to jump ship.
6. Mermaid sculpture in Goodland made out of scrap metal.
7. Morgan in Goodland.
8. The talking parrot in Goodland we mentioned a few entries ago. Would have loved to hear him swear at Nyla!
9. Bonnie and Nyla in Little Shark Creek.
10 and 11. Sea Turtles in Fiesta Key
12.Impatient pelicans waiting around the fish cleaning station in Fiesta Key.
13.Nyla having fun with a dried coconut on Boca Grande Beach.
14.Banyan trees on Boca Grande. The limbs are too heavy for the trunks to support, so each limb sprouts and grows its own support trunk.
15.Morgan, Nyla and banyan trees on Boca Grande.
Following is where and how our 45 days were spent:
Jan 01 - Left Bayou Chico in Pensacola; dropped the anchor in Sabine Bay in Pensacola Beach. (I know it’s not far, but we got a late start and sailors have a superstition about starting a voyage on Fridays.)
Jan 02 – Entered Santa Rosa Sound and sailed the ICW to Ft. Walton Beach where we docked overnight at the Ft. Walton Yacht Basin.
Jan 03 – Motored to Destin where we entered the Gulf of Mexico and motored for 21 hours.
Jan 04 – Docked at Port St. Joe Marina where we stayed two nights.
Jan 06 – Motor/sailed to Scipio Creek Marina in Appalachicola; docked for two nights.
Jan 08 – Crossed the Big Bend; sailed most of the way, but ended up motoring through the night. Took 27 hours to cross.
Jan 09 – Docked at the Clearwater Municipal Marina.
Jan 10 – Motored the ICW and anchored in Gulfport (near St. Petersburg).
Jan 11 – Mostly sailed to Longboat Key and anchored for the night.
Jan 12 – Sailed and motored to Marina Jack’s in Sarasota.
Jan 13 – Stayed on ICW and anchored in Lemon Bay near Englewood.
Jan 14 – Bypassed Placida and went a little further south to Boca Grande. Anchored 5 nights.
Jan 19 – Went back to Gasparilla Marina in Placida where Morgan installed new engines. Stayed docked for 7 nights.
Jan 26 – Sailed and motored the ICW to York Island and anchored overnight.
Jan 27 – Motored in the Gulf to Gordon Pass near Naples. Anchored overnight.
Jan 28 – Took the ICW to Goodland. Anchored two nights.
Jan 30 – Entered Gulf and sailed to Little Shark Creek in the Everglades. Anchored two nights.
Feb 01 – Sailed to Fiesta Key. Docked for 8 nights while waiting for the weather to calm down.
Feb 09 – Mostly sailed the ICW to Tavernier and anchored overnight.
Feb 10 – Motor sailed to Tarpon Basin in Key Largo. Anchored 3 nights.
Feb 13 – Anchored in Thursday Cove in Barnes Sound.
Feb 14 – Sailed to Angelfish Creek near the entrance of the Atlantic. Anchored overnight.
Feb 15 – Entered Atlantic, found the Gulf Stream and motor sailed to Alice Town on North Bimini.
Hope you enjoy the pictures!
